Health info for your customers | Tuesday,30 Jun 2009
Bupa's Group Medical Department exists simply to provide leadership and to drive the clinical quality agenda and to promote Bupa's medical credentials to the outside world. They aim to provide evidence based advice and information on health matters and investigate business opportunities using new science and technology.
Bupa's health information team, part of our Group Medical department is an invaluable resource, whose objective is to provide helpful, accurate and timely information resources for our customers. There is a wealth of information already available at your fingertips and it is in this section of Global Views where we will showcase it. Here is a quick update of what is already available to you.
500 health factsheets available on www.bupa.co.uk
www.bupa.co.uk now has more than 500 fact sheet topics, covering a wide range of conditions, treatments and tests. We aim to have 600 topics live on the website by the end of this year. We are expanding our series to cover more surgical treatments, tests and healthy living topics, for example gamma knife treatment, rotator cuff repair and trigger finger release.
All our fact sheets are written using the latest available evidence. They are freely available online http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_information/asp/ your_health/factsheets/. A number of these fact sheets are available electronically or as pre-printed leaflets. Please email Rachel Fuller fullerr@bupa-intl.com or Claire Ball ballcla@bupa.com if you would like to place an order.
The team are also writing 'question and answers' (Q&As) to accompany every online fact sheet. The aim of the Q&As is to 'home in' on real user concerns or specific questions related to the topic. More than 400 Q&As are already live on the UK website. Click here for an example of a Q&A page.
Animations provide interactive tools to help our customers understand different conditions and treatments
Our animations add value to written content and provide our customers with interactive tools to help them understand different conditions and treatments. There will shortly be an additional 10 animations on the website, making a total of 64. We plan to support around 90 online fact sheets with an animation. Some of the new animation titles will include:
- alcohol - the long-term effects
- cholesterol
- pregnancy
- wisdom tooth removal
Go to the factsheet index to view the list of animations.

Health information team on YouTube
The Health Information Team now has a channel page on YouTube and has uploaded six animations as a pilot. These are:
- blood pressure
- cancer
- deep vein thrombosis
- heart attack
- mammography
- varicose veins

Bupa health videos
14 health information videos will shortly be available on the health information pages and link into many different factsheet titles. They represent an innovative way for Bupa to communicate important health messages.
For the pilot the team focussed on three thematic strands - 'Ask the GP' series, 'Ask the physio' series and 'Health at work' series. The titles include:
- How will I be screened for MRSA before entering hospital for planned treatment?
- What exercises can I do for arthritis in my back?
- Deep breathing exercises for relaxation
Each video lasts approximately two to three minutes; they feature a short piece to camera by a doctor or healthcare professional within that field. The arthritis videos have been received particularly well and are currently with Arthritis Care for endorsement.
Health articles
The Bupa Health Information team provides health-related features for a variety of newsletters around the business. They can provide accurate and reliable health related copy, targeted to any audience. Topics they have recently covered include articles relating to dementia, obesity, vaccinations and complementary therapy.
